Making a fairy house is one of my favorite activities to do with my daughter.  I like to make a large production out of it.  We go on an “adventure walk” where we stroll through the neighborhood looking for moss, leaves, acorns, pine cones, flowers, twigs and anything and everything that seems fabulous for a fairy’s new home.  Bringing out the realm of the fairies is sweet and magical and leaves her feeling that the world we live in is full of surprises and intrigue.  This is her very own Fairy House and it makes me so proud; I will keep it forever!

I like to get out all the paints, all my random craft materials and finds, glitter bottles, confetti and even all of the fallen walnuts that the crows have brought us, and of course, shells galore.  Fairies like to sleep in shell beds after all!  We begin by going collecting and getting in a great walk for the day.  She likes to dress the part so she always puts on wings and Tinkerbell shoes for her collecting.

We get back and layout all of the materials we found.  I gather the other items and set-up a crafting area with a drop cloth.  I breakdown cardboard boxes and lay them out to help her make a foundation for her creations.  I like to stay very hands off once we are all set-up.  I don’t like to add or embellish anything she has done.  If something needs hot glue I ask her where she wants it and glue it right there.

I want to have work that she created entirely by herself.  Letting her creativity shine is my ultimate goal.  She works diligently and for hours on end on this project.  I put on the Tinkerbell Soundtrack from youtube to set the mood a little, many of these songs she danced and played dress-up to at her old ballet studio.  I enjoy them for the nostalgia.  I hope this post will inspire you to start magical rituals with your tots, and help guide you in getting creative each and everyday.

We have done this many times…each time, the homes get more intricate, and the process  becomes more mystical.  It doesn’t help that our cat knocked over the first fairy house and broke it, so we ended up making more.  Then we fell in love with the idea of fairies visiting the house and enjoying the space and taking the floral seeds to plant.  Willow looks inside every now and again to see if they have left her something.

Twinkle the Tooth Fairy

One fairy house we made from paper.  We used card stock so it held the shape as we folded it in half for a rooftop.  We framed a square house shape and taped the sides down on a piece of paper.  I taped the roof on with masking tape.  We glued with hot glue and Elmer’s glue all of the found leaves and fern and natural objects to the top.  We glued the sticks in the doorway.  I made tissue flowers with streamers, pinching them to create shapes which we stapled to hold that form, and Willow chose where to put them.  This was a fast build.  I recommend using hot glue for heavy leaves and twigs.

Since making a fairy house comes with a visit from fairies, I recommend buying some flower seeds and leaving them in the house.  Pour them in bowls and leave them for the fairies to plant them.  I also have left homemade shell necklaces from fairies for her and golden tattoos.  The Pacifier fairy brought play cupcakes and a tutu once in exchange for the paci that was going to be given to other babies that needed it, i.e. her younger cousins!  This actually worked the first time!

I think it’s a good idea to leave sweet things such as: shells or special rocks, fairy stamped cards or a little water color, a sweet fairy necklace, luscious fabric pouches, etc…there are many things to gift but I would keep it charming and natural and not commercial.

I have really enjoyed activities with fairy sticker books and paper dolls.  I absolutely love paper dolls.  These are very special and fun to introduce on a fairy house and garden building day.
